It’s too soon to tell about this one, but Neil Gaiman rarely disappoints.

My book club’s latest choice is A Hologram for the King by Dave Eggers, which I’ve just begun reading. I’ve long wanted to read his What Is the What but have yet to do so.

Another author I’ve recently come to like is Gillian Flynn, and I was listening to Dark Places until it came due at the library. I like dark, and it delivers, so I’ll definitely renew it when my reservation comes back around!

I just finished The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula le Guin from 1971. It could be claimed as one of the original ideas as far as post-apocalyptic fiction is concerned, and perhaps ground-breaking, but there are so many others I’ve enjoyed much more.

It’s only just been released, but I’ve been excited about Khaled Hosseini’s new book And the Mountains Echoed for quite a while now. His other two titles, The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, set a high bar for him to meet. I love that those books possibly introduced foreign worlds to some otherwise sheltered American readers who could then see the characters as real people instead of simply as exotic objects.

What are you currently reading?

I’m listening to Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn on CD and liking it just as much as everyone said I would (so far).  It takes places in a fictitious Missouri town and was written by a Kansas City native, so how she treats the setting and characters is important to me.  The Kindle sample of The Elegance of the Hedgehog is tiding me over until my library reserve is delivered.  I’m not very patient!

What did you recently finish reading?

Mothers and Sons by Colm Toibin wasn’t what I thought it would be, much less sentimental and a pretty bizarre grouping of stories in comparison to each other.  I love Irish authors and stories of Ireland and was not disappointed there by a different style.

What do you think you’ll read next?

A borrowed book on top of my “tbr” pile that I’ve wanted to get into is Tinkers by Paul Harding.

What are you currently reading?

I’m almost done reading First Shift – Legacy (Wool #6) by Hugh Howey and would’ve been done by now if I’d had more time to read lately.  Lots of driving time has allowed me to start listening to something on my “tbr” list forever, The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath.  However, I am still working on The End of Your Life Book Club which would probably be done by now if I didn’t try to read so many books at once.

What did you recently finish reading?

The audio version of Tina Fey’s Bossypants was perfect for a recent driving trip. I stopped counting how many times I caught myself cracking up by myself in the car.  She’s a great comic writer, and now I respect her so much more as a storyteller and social commentator.

What do you think you’ll read next?

It will finally be time to start Second Shift Wool #7 by Hugh Howey when I finish First Shift of the three pre-quels of his Silo series.

www Wednesday (January 23rd)

WWW Wednesdays is a weekly meme held over on Should be Reading. To play along just answer the following questions.

What are you currently reading?

My audio experience with Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Luis Za’fon has been a good one, and I’m almost done with it.  Highly recommend!

What did you recently finish reading?

I am finishing How to be a Woman by Caitlin Moran and love what she has to say.  Any feminist “worth her salt” (as Moran would say) should read this book!  I think she’s a happy British mix of Chelsea Handler and David Sedaris.

What do you think you’ll read next?

The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe is my book club’s next pick. Our friend Kay gave us all a copy for Christmas, so we’re reading it together for February.  It’s about a son’s experience getting to know his mother better through their mutual love of reading that they discuss while she lay dying of cancer.  I know I’m gonna cry my eyes out.

What are you reading?  Join in the fun of this meme and let us all know!

www Wednesday (July 18)

MizB at shouldbereading.com asks three questions every week for www Wednesday.  Check out the blog for MizB’s responses.

What are you currently reading?

It’s so embarrassing to admit I am still reading the two books I was reading last week at this time, In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson and Hurricane by Hugh Howey.  I’ve been short on reading time lately.

What did you recently finish?

My son and I have enjoyed some more Kindle freebies this week, including The King’s Secret, Wookiwoo, I Love Youand The Six Pirates.

What do you think you’ll read next?

A long-overdue read sitting on my Kindle is Yiddish Yoga: Ruthie’s Adventures in Love, Loss and the Lotus Position by Lisa Grunberger.  I need something somewhat light-hearted.

Wanna play along?  Please share your own list here or on MizB’s log.
