www Wednesday (Oct. 10)

This is a weekly bookish meme hosted by the sensational, MizB, at Should be Reading.  To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?
• What did you recently finish reading?
• What do you think you’ll read next?

 What are you currently reading?

The audio book I’m listening to right now is Watership Down by Richard Adams.  It’s widely considered a children’s classic, but I’ve never read it.  Listening to it read in a great British accent is even better.  It’s about a community of rabbits, and many people call it an allegory of society although the author denies that claim.

What did you recently finish reading?

Finally … finally, I’m finishing A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness.  Considering I don’t like love stories or vampires, it wasn’t bad.  The heroine could have/should have been stronger and not relied on her dark love interest so much in my opinion, so that lowered my opinion of it considerably.  It would take too much energy to continue the series.

I also finished a book club pick, Moloka’i, by Alan Brennert. It was a much more enjoyable reading experience than I anticipated, although it based on a great historical American tragedy about how people were ostracized for illness and was very heartbreaking as a result.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My book club is reading Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer next, and I’m looking forward to it very much.  It sounds like religious zealotry at its most horrible.  This is by the author of Into the Wild, so I hope it’s all I’m cracking it up to be.

What are you reading?  Join in and post your list at the original meme.   Happy reading!

• What are you currently reading?  I have recently started Smoke & Mirrors by Neil Gaiman, which is great!  He’s a master of word play.  Some of the shorts are repeats from M is for Magic, but they’re great.  Especially The Goldfish Pond & Other Stories.  I’m also reading The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, as I had never done so as a child.

• What did you recently finish reading?

A nice Kindle freebie from a new favorite author, Hugh Howey, jumped up and caught my attention.  It is The Plagiarist and has a very funky futuristic concept that I enjoyed.  Download it free on Amazon.

• What do you think you’ll read next?

My book club has pegged In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson as our next group read.  He is said to be a hilarious travel writer, with other works like A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering American on the Appalachian Trail.  Should be fun!

Please feel free to comment with a link to your list!

WWW Wednesdays (May 30)

Thanks to Miz B for her weekly meme at Should Be Reading!Image

To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…

What are you currently reading?

I am in the throes of reading Wool 5: The Stranded by Hugh Howey.  Having mentioned this goodreads author three weeks in a row now, I’ll stop with the accolades.  Suffice to say it’s a great dystopian series that is soon to be made into a movie.  I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

What did you recently finish reading?

The last book I finished was Wool 4: The Unraveling.  This “silo” series has kept me coming back for more.  Each one in the series introduces new characters in this post-apocalyptic society.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My book club has chosen We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver, which was quite a popular movie lately.  It’s not one I would have normally chosen to read and sounds kind of creepy.

It seems my “tbr” list just keeps growing!

Playing along with the three weekly questions…

• What are you currently reading?

The Death of Sweet Mister  by Daniel Woodrell

Woodrell is a delightful author from the Ozarks.  You don’t have to be from here to understand the nuances of his writing, but being a native helps you fully appreciate the realism!

• What did you recently finish reading?

Wool 2:  Proper Gauge by Hugh Howey

The second in a series by a fellow “Apocalypse Whenever” groupie on goodreads.  I’ll probably go through the entire series of shorts.

• What do you think you’ll read next?

The Most They Ever Had by Rick Bragg

Book club pick for April about southern life … seems I’m submerged in country noir (and liking it).  I’ve also heard good things about his numerous other works.

Thanks, MizB (http://shouldbereading.wordpress.com/)
