Ms. Brandes is a Midwestern native currently residing in the Ozarks region with her husband, vivacious son, and pets. With a work background varying from television production to higher education after having earned B.A. and M.A. degrees in Communication Studies from the University of Missouri – Kansas City, she enjoys creating her own style of country noir.
Inspired by feminist writers, she also likes dark humor and reading post-apocalyptic fiction, and historical non-fiction. Her favorite authors include Ozarks native Daniel Woodrell, Joe R. Lansdale, Roddy Doyle, Octavia E. Butler, Daniel Sedaris, and Neil Gaiman.
Brandes has dabbled in freestyle poetry and prose since childhood. She’s an unabashed observer and commentator on human nature and life’s small absurdities, especially in and around the beautiful Ozark hills. The area uniquely blends its colorful citizens with a lush and rugged natural environment.
The short fiction within this blog combines her love of ethnography with a bit of family legend, and she loves keeping readers busy wondering which one is which.
